...my every command!
Welcome to the first of what will be a weekly blog about my forays into Commander/EDH.
I figured the best way to start posting would be to talk about me by way of an introduction.
I've been playing Magic since Revised (1994) but often class myself as being pre-Legends. I've played magic on an off since then. More recently I've settled mainly on playing EDH and currently run three decks:
Nekusar, the Mindrazer:
My Nekusa deck is a storm deck, it seeks to disrupt and control until I can force people to cycle their hands and in doing so draw more cards that can be used to force them to cycle their hands again all the while causing them pain in the process.
Cards like Cyclonic Rift, Black Sun's Zenith and Curse of the Swine are used to disrupt my opponents' board states. While cards like Whispering Madness and Molten Psyche cause the damage when used in conjunction with Nekusa and other cards like Underworld Dreams.
Ghave, Guru of Spores:
My Ghave deck is all about the combo. There are, to my knowledge over 40 '3 card combos' possible from the deck, you just have to seek out the right cards and then boom.
It makes great use of cards like Ashnod's Altar, Earthcraft and Doubling Season to go 'infinite' and then cards like Blasting Station and Blood Artist to seal the deal. It has cards like Pentavus as alternatives to Ghave if I need them.
Thraximundar:
I call my Thraximundar deck Clone of the Zombies and run it as combination of clones and a tribal zombie deck.
There are so many great zombie creature or zombie related cards that it's hard to know what to include in such a deck and what to leave out.
My favourite zombies include Geth, Lord of the Vault, Grimgrin, Corpse-Born and Zombie Trailblazer. Then I mix them with cards like Rite of Replication, Army of the Damned and Coat of Arms to really get my troops shuffling.
Some of you may have noticed that these decks are all based on the WOTC/MTG Commander decks and that's true. But they aren't the only decks I have ever constructed just the ones I like a lot and have constructed at the moment. In the past I've used all sorts of Legendary creatures as my commanders. Such as: Ruric Thar, the Unbowed in a creature only deck, Grenzo, Dungeon Warden trying to make use of scry and other similar effects and Tariel, Reckoner of Souls in a denial/frustration deck.
I'm sure over the coming weeks I'll dip into my experience with these decks and break down my current ones to give you examples of how I construct decks and my thoughts behind my card choices.
Until then welcome aboard and don't be a stranger.
Phil
